What is thermography

Thermography is an infrared imaging technique useful for detecting variations in an object or area’s heat signature. Thermographic cameras show what is called a “heat zone,” or the heat signature. The images are essentially colour-coordinated, with the intensity and colour in different parts of the image demonstrating the temperature variation throughout the image.

How does thermography work?

Thermographic cameras produce images of heat given off by radiation. The cameras detect radiation in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Since infrared radiation is emitted by almost everything, thermography makes it possible to see something (even invisible gasses) with or without light. Temperature rises with the amount of radiation emitted, which is what creates the visible heat zone showing variations in temperature.

Because warm objects stand out well against cooler backgrounds, using a thermal imaging camera makes it much easier to see objects and surfaces that are different temperatures than their surroundings. This makes thermal imaging especially useful for things like surveillance, medical imaging, and non-destructive testing.
